Ascites – Condition Overview

Ascites refers to abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. It is most commonly caused by chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis, but may also occur due to heart failure, kidney disease, infections, or cancer.

Proper ascites management focuses on treating the underlying cause, reducing fluid buildup, relieving symptoms, and preventing complications.

Symptoms of Ascites

  • Progressive abdominal swelling

  • Albumin infusion if required
  • Treatment of underlying liver disease
  • Liver transplant evaluation in advanced cases
